Happy four,

Mr. Jish.  The virtual metacosm wouldn’t be the same without your smiling face.

We did it better,

didn’t we, Lance and Dave?  Newsweek’s “Daily Davos.”  Our ‘00 DavosNewbies  [via Wayback Machine].  An in-the-the audience experience, and WAP enabled, too.  Ah, it was a fun time, early 2000.

Pings.

There’s an issue with my pinging blo.gs and weblogs.com.  WordPress is sending http://www.dangerousmeta.com/ to blo.gs and http://www.dangerousmeta.com/index.php to weblogs.com.  Not the usual urls (http://www.dangerousmeta.com).  So I will probably not show up in your ‘custom’ ping widgets until I can resolve it.

City Pages:

“The Blogger at War.”  The circumstances of this individual aside, we all comment on items outside of our expertise, and we are often spouting subject-of-the-moment media-based opinions without any true discursive research having been done.  Being merely ‘opinionated’ is annoying ... and encourages people of good character to avoid you at dinner parties.

The difference between a good weblogger and a poor one, I deem, is the distinction between legitimate opinion and arbitrary opinion.  When one is so ‘righteous’ as to lose any shred of humility when discoursing upon subjects that are not within one’s scope of expertise ... it’s time to take a step back and analyze what you’re really doing when you weblog.

Often we’re talking, when we should be listening.  Of this, I am as guilty as the rest.  My readers keep me in line, and for that, I thank them.

Dave’s

not here, man.  And the metacosm’s a poorer place.  I was trying to find that quote, I believe it’s Taoist, about either Zhuang zhi or some such famous Taoist looking for enlightenment.  My best paraphrase from memory: He meets a man carrying a burden, and asks him “What is enlightenment?”  The man swings his burden down and wipes his brow.  “Ah, I understand.  But what comes *after* enlightenment?”  The man swings the burden upon his back, smiles, and goes on his way.  Best wishes, my friend.  If you ever wish to carry the burden again, I’ll be reading.  In the meantime, enjoy your enlightenment.

Traffic.

I’ve been meaning to ask this question for a while.  Anyone else notice a significant fall-off in traffic on Fridays?  I lose between 15 and 30 percent of traffic.  Cramming to get work done?  Getting ready for the weekend?  I wonder if the traffic correlates with overall productivity in the five day workweek.  Just thinkin’, as per usual ...

iRights becomes iRi:

Here’s to new beginnings.  Jeremy Bowers was one of the first, if not *the* first, weblogging in this subject matter and style [taking one question, and extensively, precisely and even exhaustively exploring it].  Get done with one of his posts, and you felt you’d read something truly substantive. The archetype for many who followed.  Rarely do the originals get appropriate recognition.  I bow low and long to your hard work, Jeremy.

Is it just me,

or has Metafilter been on a tear lately?  Damn fine finds that have sent me off on some really interesting tangents.

Scripting.com:

I’m in big agreement with Dave here.  Rather than crappy old hard-to-use archives, I’d rather have my posts (once they’ve expired from the front page), go into a portal-like directory, under categories I choose.  I’ve spent a lot of time building up this weblog.  It certainly would be nice to leverage it a bit more thoroughly.

Andre’s tipped 27 + n?  Personally, my sister and I agreed to start counting backwards at 30.  You’re *old*, man.  Nice sunrise too, Andrea!
