City Pages:

“The Blogger at War.”  The circumstances of this individual aside, we all comment on items outside of our expertise, and we are often spouting subject-of-the-moment media-based opinions without any true discursive research having been done.  Being merely ‘opinionated’ is annoying ... and encourages people of good character to avoid you at dinner parties.

The difference between a good weblogger and a poor one, I deem, is the distinction between legitimate opinion and arbitrary opinion.  When one is so ‘righteous’ as to lose any shred of humility when discoursing upon subjects that are not within one’s scope of expertise ... it’s time to take a step back and analyze what you’re really doing when you weblog.

Often we’re talking, when we should be listening.  Of this, I am as guilty as the rest.  My readers keep me in line, and for that, I thank them.
