Brain Power - At Card Table, Clues to a Lucid Old Age. “We think, for example, that it’s very important to use your brain, to keep challenging your mind, but all mental activities may not be equal. We’re seeing some evidence that a social component may be crucial.”  My italics, for emphasis.  And they don’t mean Twitter.

My father’s mother played bridge with the same crowd well into her ‘90s, and for better or worse was sharp as a tack until she dropped.  (I say for worse because she was also reputed to be too mean to die).

This community/activity has the added advantage that the same group “samples” your mental acuity on a regular basis and could provide the best early warning you are slipping your cogs.
