WSJ:

The “Freebird” phenomena.  I’ll add my point of information.  When we yelled it at concerts way back when, it was an exhortation to leave the pre-scripted formulaic try-to-sound-like-the-radio and to give us some improvisation.  Give us variations on the theme, as the live Lynyrd Skynyrd did.  Give us real entertainment value for our hard-earned cash.  Show off your talent.  Give us further reason to be undying fans.  I don’t know why it didn’t catch on with Frampton’s improvs, but I guess we were still too close to disco.  And Frampton was never ‘cool’ anyway.

Period placement.  In the 70’s, many used to walk out and demand $$ back if the performing act used any sort of playback equipment (taped backgrounds and such).  Except Pink Floyd.  At one point, in ‘78, my dormmates came back from a Clapton concert totally pissed.  He had one of his backup guitarists perform some of his solos, he was so blown from drugs.  You can imagine what that did for his rep; albums got run over, burnt.  “God” let them down.  I was happy to introduce the disgrunted to Jeff Beck.

“Freebird” was a cry for some creative soul to be expressed.  That’s how I understood, and used it.  Via many sources, but today via Papascott.
