Garret, I first came across
Simonides’s Memory Palaces in Jonathan Spence’s
The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci about the Jesuit Matteo Ricci in early China.  He demonstrates the memory palace technique in the structure of the book which is tied to learning four Han characters.  If you haven’t seen this book it might be up your alley.  (It was a text for a Westerners in Asia class that I took.)
