The Verge: Keurig is locking down its coffee makers to keep out cheap refills.

Aside from offering a larger 28-ounce serving size, Keurig’s next line of brewers will contain ‘interactive technology’ designed to lock out unlicensed K-Cups.” So much for a ‘free market.’

I’d be trying to protect a method to sell $8 / lb coffee for $49 / l too. But I have a $2 widget I can put loose coffee into.

A Keurig is a convenient form-factor; the produced product, thin and weak ... the price, prohibitive. We use one of their self-loading cartridges with a cheat: we use a #4 paper coffee filter and cut it in the shape of a smile (a shallow curve) that fits inside the little filter basket. Without, bitter coffee. With, smooth coffee that’s decently strong and delivered in a flash.
