SF New Mexican: Plan for training flights gets flak.
I’m torn on this. I’ve had enough of noisy military aircraft rattling the walls of my cage, but the kid in me would sure like to watch military aircraft jinking around the mountains and canyons around here.
I think, however, the military’s representative left a little bit of info out. When I went down to McGuire AFB in NJ to see an airshow, the stealthy aircraft (or non-stealth aircraft trying to be stealthy) were primarily noise-proof when on approach; as soon as they pass you and are heading away, the noise will knock you over. I could turn my back on a C-5 making a ‘stealthy’ approach to drop men and/or equipment, and not really hear it with the buzz of the crowd. But once it passed by, there was no mistaking what was going on [This example is not doing the stealth approach, but you get the idea]. Amazed me, however, how fast it could dump an incredible amount of troops and armaments. You could be in full conflict in minutes, with very little warning, with a C-5 or three sneaking up on you.

It’s the choppers heading over to the SF airport (it’s now a helo repair base) that get me most. We don’t get a lot of the ripping/tearing fighter jets - except when they’re late for lunch down in ALB.

As big a fan of military aviation as I am, and even earning my living from it; I gotta say I don’t want to put up with that noise everywhere.
