On the rez, Native Americans debate gay union.  “American Indians firmly believe from forever that procreation was essential for survival, but you could play with anybody.”  In the Southwest, modern Catholicism is more tolerant of Native American religion than other sects.  It wasn’t always so, the impact of ‘Conquistador Catholicism’ brought the torture and death of many natives, helping to spur the bloody massacres of the 1680 revolt.  Nevertheless, there are many Christians [though not ‘Christians’ as mainstream middle-America might narrowly define] on the reservations and in the pueblos, that will swing this choice.  What I’m trying to say is, this is not a ‘pure’ aboriginal choice.

“We do not want churches because they will teach us to quarrel about God, as the Catholics and Protestants do. We do not want that.”

“The Earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it ... Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade ... where I choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to think and talk and act for myself, and I will obey every law, or submit to the penalty.”
