In These Times: If Clinton/Kaine are “Progressive,” Then the Word Has Lost All Meaning.

“Clinton’s tautological definition suggests that progressive has become a meaningless term devoid of ideological content; a signifier that signifies nothing in particular.” Limbaugh and the Contract with America loonies turned liberal into an epithet. The Democrats went looking for a similar definition, and came up with progressive. Simple as that. Still, you cannot call a Democratic Leadership Council member a ‘progressive’. More progressive than the hard right, yes (and that’s not saying one whole hell of a lot, at times). But purely ‘progressive’ ... no.
