”Neuroscientists and psychologists have found that when a character is experiencing action or sadness, for instance, we step into his shoes: areas of our brains are active that would be firing up if the fiction were our real-world experience. Compelling stories trigger squirts of oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin, which are associated with rewards, pleasure and well-being.
