Washington City Paper: What Do D.C. Cyclists Have Against Bike Helmets?
”Safety standards apply to all helmets, so you can actually get the cheapest model on the market and be just as safe as if you got the priciest.” Perhaps so, but the cheapest ones feel like strapping on a cinderblock. To get something decent, you have to go twice the price. Even going out for an ‘easy’ ride, I wear it. Once you’ve done an unanticipated ‘endo’ on a presumed safe ride, you clearly understand the benefits.
Comments:
The lazy attitude of ‘it’s never happened to me, it’ll never happen to me’ is so misplaced, misguided. Statistically, they’re due for a big one. Hopefully they’ll tuck and roll and survive it.

I watched my then six-year-old son fall off his bike at walking speed and turn much of his left side face, arm, and exposed leg into road rash. He was, understandably, crying, but it wasn’t until I took off his helmet that was chilled. I could put my thumb into a helmet divot caused but what seemed to be an inconsequentially sized stone. I shudder to think what could have happened. As an adult, while riding, I have worn a helmet religiously since the mid-1970s.
