SF New Mexican:
New oil and gas development rules ‘toughest’ to date says Ross. Oh, my. Consult other experts, please ... ones with knowledge of current technologies and their impacts. Also, annual well testing is not enough. Subsidence is a distinct threat, a greater threat with increasing numbers of ‘punctures’. Water quality and aquifer levels need to be confirmed at least on a three month basis throughout drilling and extraction periods, IMHO.
Doesn’t matter if these regulations are ‘strongest’ or not, the gauge is whether they are appropriate to the very real impacts these technologies will have in our unique area. As I’ve said before, drilling risks the only source of water in a desert area suffering extended drought. We have ample reason to impose extremely strict regulations. The USGS itself admits that contamination of ground water may be irreversible. Why risk it?
