It’s bizarre. In northern NJ where I live you’d think there was no recession going on right now, the way people are still mobbing the malls, spending money, going out to dinner, etc. I see no real difference around here between now and say, 5 years ago.

Yet, when I was in northern Illinois back in November, I stopped by a large retail outlet center outside of Chicago and it was practically a ghost town. Something like 100+ stores and my wife and I were told numerous times we were the first customers some stores had seen all day, and we were there at 2:00 pm!

People are trying here in NM, but there’s no traction yet.  People are purchasing at big box stores - not local establishments.  Money’s not staying here, so the ‘level spending’ isn’t doing us any good.
