NY Times Washington:

A Bipartisan Bid on Mortgage Aid Is Gaining Speed. Is anyone else sick to death of these photos of idiotically grinning politicos?  Makes me think of Steve Martin doing his Nixon-with-a-banjo schtick.  “Everything’s FINE!”

But in their world, everything *is* fine: they’re doing their normal, daily work of fixing the world’s most prescient problems. It’s what they do, and as long as that’s what they’re doing, by golly, everything’s FINE!

Congress can’t help with mortgages for a bazillion reasons, good and bad. It’s too far away from their influence.

Which, in a way, makes it perfect: we can’t really blame them for fucking it up as they really have no influence over the mortgage mess anymore. From that perspective, it’s the legislative equivalent of screaming into a soundproof room. “No matter what I do, I can’t make it any worse.”
