NY Times: New Jersey Transit Seeks Higher Fares.
25%?!!! Only linked because I used to buy monthlies from Princeton Junction to NYC. And it cost over $300/month back in the early ‘90’s! 25%. I feel for ya, Joisians.
Comments:
I thought it was getting bad when I left in ‘92, but that sounds WAY worse. What do people do who count on the lines? Just suck it up and risk getting fired? Driving’s even more insane.
I once drove my motorcycle up to the Bronx from NJ during rush hour. I wouldn’t want to repeat the experience [GWB, big greasy iron plates across it, nightmare on two wheels].

I am so happy to not be commuting into NYC anymore. If I were, I’d be extremely pissed about this rate hike. NJT trains are regularly, late, missing, broken down or so crowded that you are forced to stand the entire way.
Yet, NJT does not offer automatic credits for when their trains are late or broken down. I know people who hav elost their jobs because they were late for meetings because NJT has dropped the ball one too many times.
On some lines, the trains are old, dirty and disgusting. For the amount of money people pay for tickets, you’d think the NJT would try to keep the inside of their trains a bit cleaner. There’s nothing more disgusting than sitting down and realizing the smell you smell is from someone’s 3-week old rotten banana they’ve stuffed between the wall of the train and the seat, or worse yet, a dirty diaper.
Until recently, the Montclair-Boonton line had no weekend service, yet people paying for monthly tickets paid the the same as every other line even though they only received 5 days of service instead of 7. Did NJT offer a credit or refund? Of course not.
