Lasik Surgery: When the Fine Print Applies to You. There are always a handful of people who have complications ... question is, predicting who is a ‘good’ candidate.  The technique’s being shopped around as somewhat foolproof.  When it comes to eyes, I check the FAA’s site ... piloting requires excellent eyesight. They’ll know the drawbacks.  After reading their warnings, I’ll stick to contacts and glasses thank you very much.

Since we’re sharing irresponsible anecdotes…

...I know of precisely ONE person who’s had a Lasik-gone-wrong experience, out of maybe a hundred who’ve had perfect (for lack of a better word) results. Count my wife as one of the fortunate majority that was an ideal candidate. She went through roughly a month of “halos” at night.

The one individual I know continues to rail to this day about how lasik hurt his eyes.

One fateful evening, however, deep into his usual 12-pack, he’s counseling another acquaintance regarding *their* upcoming Lasik and lets slip the revelation that the post-surgery itching can be REALLY bad, and he broke the rules and ended up rubbing his eyes. “That’s probably what screwed me up!” he laughs, before resuming his normal tirade against Lasik.

I’m telling ya: that’s *exactly* what screwed him up. The assistants at our center told us over and over and over: Don’t. Rub. Your. Eyes. Use the anti-itch drops and deal. It’s only a few hours.

This throwaway NYT article has this priceless admission:

“Nearly a year later, my problems remain. Still, I’m not mad at my doctor. I’m mad at myself. No one forced me to do it. In our quick-fix culture, we forget that there are risks with any surgery, elective or not.”

Bulls!t, honey: your doctor is precisely the one to blame, elective or not. It wasn’t your vanity or the strawman “quick-fix culture” - you picked a shitty surgeon. Sue the bitch.
