The Right to Ride.  “This summer, the Backcountry Horsemen of the Flathead – which is by no means limited just to men – has another ambitious slate of projects lined up. But along with the work, there will be a lot of good food, riding, and nights spent around a campfire, under the stars.”  I came so close to giving horse packing a try, back in my ‘younger days’.

This subject came up the other day at work, where we have runners and hikers, unfortunately the bicyclists were unrepresented:

And after a lengthy diatribe about ATVs and four wheel drives in the back country - I had to point out that every ORGANIZATION of back-country enthusiasts I knew, especially motor sports, had give back programs of trail maintenance and other inkind efforts.

I’ve even seen hikers and bicyclists doing trail work.

So maybe we need to break the rugged individualist mindset and get people to join organizations - at least for the maintenance functions.
