It must smell like holy hell.  We found a bottle of 1800’s clock oil in our old grandfather clock. Yellow oil inside, yellowed paper label. Dad opened it up and ... wham. The smell of rotting whale flesh was all over the house in a split second. I mean the smell insta-penetrated three floors of our home. This bottle was small enough to hide in your hand. Apparently the go-to clock oil back then was whale oil.  We discerned it on the label *after* opening it.  It’s a smell I won’t forget anytime soon.
