They are selling the reading of old books all wrong, nothing will sharpen your ear to ~casual, institutionalized racism/sexism than reading it in the venacular. It has a subtlety we have lost except in the most coded signaling ( this election year has been quite an education on that).

Older texts are worth reading because not only the use if language has changed si dramatically, so have the mores’.

If you can’t enjoy it on that basis you can always play “Was that sexist?”
