Coding Horror did a bit on monitor stands last year that was well worth the read: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000959.html

I dunno. I have 3 different monitors, side by side, all different brands (Apple, Dell, Viewsonic). To keep them aligned, I pulled books out of my bookshelf that were exactly the right hight and used them as monitor stands to level everything out Works perfectly. Don’t need no high-brow froo-froo expensive contraption, no sireeee, when goold ol’ readin’ books’ll do.

Before clients came to my office, I used beer boxes.

With empties inside, for support.
