Stand and Deliver is one of my favorite movies of all time.  Back when I was a Calculus teacher, we called it “the math teacher’s Rocky.”

I never met Escalante, but several of his acolytes presented at conferences, and I found them to be very inspiring.  At heart, they were saying we were making things too complicated; that believing in the kids and sharing our love for what math can be were the two elements that would make everything work.
