Specifically, what energy source is algae an “effective alternative” for?

Hey, not to knock your linkage, but…. when I read sentences like this:

“As global warming speeds up, oil rich countries harbor terrorists, pollution reaches all time highs, and oil prices fluctuate widely, renewable energy sources are the answer.”

..a bunch of flags go up. This reads like a wishful position piece. Astroturf, to be blunt.

If algae really is an ‘alt energy’, there’s really no need to invoke the goblins of terrorism to get your point across.

The energy densities of natural gas and coal, around 55 mega-joules per kilogram and 20-35 mega-joules per kilogram respectively, are similar to those of crude oil.

Note the comparison: 55 MJ/kg. Algae (at least in my current understanding) is exponentially lower than that.

Gasoline and diesel, jeremiah.  Which also means jet fuel and home heating oil.  Which bug you use in production determines the output product.

And goblins have become such a part of what passes for conversation anymore…little science.
