Apogee

has a nice article on white balance and color temperatures, but the best part is the handy little chart of color temps in the middle of the article.  Nice ballparks to work with, if you’ve got a digital that will allow manual color temp entry.

Epiphany.

I was out on a shoot this morning, and when putting the lens caps back on my cameras while packing up, I realized the filter size of the Canon 18-55mm EFS was the same as the thread on the Canon WC-DC58N wide adapter for my G5.  Got one of those silly looks on my face, then I threaded it on (heavy, needs hand support), peeked through the lens, and had a slightly vignetted 12.6mm [~20mm at full frame]!  I need to judge quality, of course, but hey ... I like the added width in a pinch.

Canon EOS 20D update:

Still *extremely* happy, especially with the silky smoothness of image the Canon CMOS gives.  Reviews have discussed the noise the shutter makes; I will second the notion that this is not a camera that lends itself to unobtrusive street photography.  But more than that, after a month’s use, I can say that mirror slap is significant.  This would be the major feature I miss from my low-impact film Nikons.  Canon definitely needs to apply some sound- and shock-absorption tech to the shutter and mirror on the future D series.  If you’re not zen-aware of stance and bracing, you can too easily end up with unsharp photos.  Get that quick release for your tripod (or light monopod with ball head, as I’m contemplating) and use it.  A handgrip strap, such as the Hakuba, can help brace the little beast.  [The stock Canon strap hasn’t softened up enough to be wound around the hand as a handgrip, nor do I think it ever will within the camera’s lifetime.  It’s stiff and uncomfortable, and might scratch the LCD if stowed improperly.]

Then again, maybe I spend too much time minutely inspecting photos at 100% on a large monitor ... the photographic version of navel-gazing.

A tip: The 1.5/1.6x sensor factors of prosumer DSLRs means you’ll need faster shutter speeds than your film reflexes might recommend for a given lens in mm’s.  So with a 50mm lens, the next speed above 1/60 would be the one you want as a ballpark minimum.  Unless you’re Ben Grimm.

Finally, and I may have mentioned this before (but I want to emphasize it),  the 20D doesn’t ship with an LCD protector.  I’ve been guarding mine with my life, but concern over it’s survival is definitely cramping my style.  Hoodman has two solutions [flip-up, pro cap].  I’ll go for the pro cap, hoping the kit with the magnifier might allow me to leave my reading glasses in the camera bag when I wear contacts.  It’s so uncool to juggle sunglasses/reading glasses while trying to capture action ...
