Macworld: Adobe will unveil Creative Suite 5 on April 12.

I’m eager for the new software, my pocketbook ... notsomuch. The last update to CS4, however, streamlined my workflow and gave my business higher profit margins, so I won’t be a price-grouch this time around.  I haven’t had a chance to watch the beta programs closely, so I’ll be interested to dig deeper into the announced feature sets.

DP Review: Adobe releases Lightroom 3 Beta update.

”Lightroom 3 will be based around a new processing engine and the second iteration adds luminance noise reduction to the color noise reduction options that appeared in the initial beta. The latest beta also supports tethered shooting for a number of Nikon and Canon DSLRs, enables importing and management of video files and improves overall functioning of the software.”  The forums are buzzing about the tethered capabilities.

Later: More info about what’s changed, from Computer-Darkroom.

Cold Hard Flash: French Student Parties After Finishing Rococo.

The timing is a bit on the sluggish side (perhaps just in the middle), but the environments and enjoyable twist at the end make for a strong short.” I don’t agree.  If you’re a fan of foreign cinema, you realize the Hollywood penchant for flash/flash/flash fast cuts does not extend around the world.  Even comparing old American television to new, you can see we’ve applied short attention span theatre to everything we do.  A slower pace is ... relaxing.

Oh, and very nicely done, “French Student.”

A new version of Adobe’s Creative Suite products is due to arrive soon, but these demonstrations won’t be showing up in the software, the two said.” Rats.

ReadWriteWeb: Does HTML5 Really Beat Flash? The Surprising Results of New Tests.

Here’s what this all means in layman’s terms: Apple isn’t allowing Flash to become more efficient on their Mac OS X/Safari platform (or their iPod/iPhone/iPad one, either) by not providing the access to the hardware it needs to reduce its CPU load. Adobe is waiting and watching to see if they do, but, as Ozer says ‘the ball is in Apple’s court.’”  Sadly, not in wider public perception, but I think Jobs’ remarks are (as evinced by this and other articles) going to backfire on him.  Reality had to punch through at some point.

Slate: Apple’s multitouch lawsuit is both dumb and dangerous.

“Patents are meant to protect inventions, not ideas. This is a crucial distinction: Two inventors may have the same idea — Hey, I just came up with an automatic bagel maker! — but if one of them uses ropes and pulleys to make bagels while the other uses space-age robotics, they’ve got two different inventions. The underlying idea—a machine to make bagels — can’t be protected under the law.

FlashMobileBlog: Battery Performance with Flash Player 10.1 on Nexus One.

Counter to the nonsense being passed around, Flash ain’t so bad on Android. Neither is the recent against-Flash post about touchscreen devices accurate.

A side comment: Try running the debugger version of Flash Player sometime. You’ll realize how many sloppy Flash programmers are breaking your video experience. Even large site/services! Rather than bitch to Adobe, you might be better served to nudge the authors of the Flash content to debug their creations. Photographers’ sites are particularly bad about this; Flash is widely used by photographers as a technique to prevent right-click copying.

Three Flash/HTML5 articles.

Ludamix: Flash 10 versus JS/HTML5: The Tour Guide.

Uncompiled Thoughts: HTML5 is not about the death of Flash, but the return of browser innovation.

Web Builder Zone: HTML5 vs Flash.

IMHO, HTML5 is offering an update to DHTML, and until there are tools like Flash CS4 that give GUI access to simple gestural programming in HTML5, Javascript/Ajax and CSS3, rather than dry programmatic programming, it will remain as popular as DHTML was.  Very few people bridge the artist/programmer divide successfully; to expect them to do so, is thintelligent thinking in my book.
