wed 11 sep 02

remember september 11.

in ground zero, bleak paper blows
between grey streets, row on row
nothing marks our place, in the sky
dark birds migrate, calling, fly
scarce heard amid the cars below.

we are the dead. short months ago
we lived, felt dawn, saw broadway glow
loved and were loved, and now we lie
in ground zero.

honor us not with violence
those fortunes are what placed us hence
this day we ask you embrace peace
forego the bomb, let anger cease
we hear your prayers, while fall winds blow
in ground zero.

a riff on john mcrae's 'in flanders fields.'

honor them with peace, not war.
