andrea has shots of the rhine. susan has sunsets. this gives me an idea ... we ought to all get together, agree on a day, and do a '24 hours in the life of manila weblogs' or something like that. share via photos where we live, what we do. ah, just a thought.
occasionally i go trolling through my referrer logs; today i found the olive press. they had a wonderful link to a book by marcello fabbri, the light of memory (introduction). beautiful lines of poetry from a man who has lost his sight. whoever you are, thanks for stopping by!

the new republic: america's military readiness. read it, bookmark it.
hearing george w. bush talk about social security gets me worried. the republicans for years have been against 'big government' and 'bureaucracy' ... and social security has been one of their biggest targets. here's a link to pre-social security history, just so folks unfamiliar with america's relationship to old age and pensions can be cleared up a bit. also, at the end of this particular article, is a great quote from theodore roosevelt: "we must protect the crushable elements at the base of our present industrial structure...it is abnormal for any industry to throw back upon the community the human wreckage due to its wear and tear, and the hazards of sickness, accident, invalidism, involuntary unemployment, and old age should be provided for through insurance." i follow this with the statistic that '... less than half of america's workers are covered by any type of employment-related pension program (other than social security) ...'
pollingreport.com ... an independent organization monitoring all the major polling agencies. enough polling information to make even the biggest poll junkie ill. what is interesting is how people respond to similar questions phrased differently. the numbers can rise or fall dramatically due to simple language changes.
brittanica: was karl marx the prophet of globalization? oh, this is going to get the wto protestors worked up ... it might even get them allied with the more xenophobic factions of the republican party. i can see it now ... communism = globalization. great new campaign tactic ... we have a new 'evil empire' to conquer! [quick cut to 10 second clip of vincent price evil laugh]
the telegraph: review of the luzhin defence. the reviewer laments 'where have all the good literary directors gone?'
inside: hollywood squirms over witness list for senate violence hearings. john van dyk in iowa had some good observations along these lines yesterday ...

it's been a nice, lazy morning. got a bit chilly last night; maybe that heat down texas way may break soon. made coffee, got back into bed with reading materials.
aaaaahhhhh.
